I am 8 years old and I am tall enough to see out of the window and straight into the sky. I trace the lines between the blue and the green and the brown with my little finger. There are layers to this cake and I make them with my hands. First, I mark the line of the mountains. Their large lumpiness makes me feel safe and also heavy in the center of my chest. Like when the aunts say “no” in unison and I can feel myself stuck down onto my chair. Next, I fill in the tufts of trees. Sometimes they come out of the mountains. And sometimes they stand all alone. Then, I trace the tops of the buildings. Some of them are castles. And some of them are crumbling walls. I lift up my doll and let her walk the lines too. We follow along together for a while. Repeating. Sky. Mountains. Trees. Castles. But then we can’t hold back any longer. We leave the lines behind. And we start to fly.
